Peckery thing at Crawford Oaks?

Post by kepPNW » December 14th, 2019, 7:52 am

Saw a number of these yesterday, from the Crawford Oaks trailhead up to just above the Eight-Mile Creek crossing. Acted a bit woodpeckery, seeming to be going after munchables in the dead wood. Not one I'm familiar with?

Thanks!

Lewis's woodpecker. Great find.

It is a special find, I hope to see one one day.

Well, I saw dozens of them in that first mile above the TH yesterday. They were wary, flying away when they noticed me looking at them. (Lots of western meadowlarks singing cheerfully, too.) Good weekend to head east?

They're always in those oaks along Eightmile Creek, and there are more of them in the winter. They also hang out in the oaks north of the Catherine Creek Arch near the pinnacles. I saw dozens of them there about a month ago (also a couple of acorn woodpeckers).

FANTASTIC!!!! We hiked up the trails on the Syncline and saw several of these great birds...unable to accept a Lewis's looking at Sibley's since we never see anything cool! Very distinct long beak. I came to PH just on the off chance someone posted about them...and low and behold--->Perkery thing caught my attention.

Very cool! :D

I'd actually just heard, earlier this week, that there were bunches of them near Catherine Creek now too.

So fun to see those unexpected ones!
