Yeah, and chunks of ice too. I assume people were messing around and tossing stuff on the lake.

I'm going with the explanation that you are seeing the formation of a new glacier.
It is rather peculiar to see a slab of ice with such a defined edge. Even if the lake water had dropped, I would have expected to see a tapered edge (longer on the top than the base).
