huckleberry growing on ground

Post by pcg » October 9th, 2018, 8:52 am

I found some variety of huckleberry that doesn't appear to get more than an inch or two tall. Is this dwarf bilberry? It seems to grow much closer to the ground than the pictures of dwarf bilberry I've seen. The berries are right on the ground. This was in west central BC. ID please - thanks!

Thanks Adam. I was hoping you would reply. I just sent a photo off to BC parks to ask for some ID. I'll post here when I get something back.

Vaccinium uliginosum (bog blueberry) is the other possiblity, and based on a Google Image Search, I think it's more likely.

Well I got a fast response back from someone at BC parks... "It is in the Vaccinium family and is a type of blueberry I am told." So nothing really helpful.

Thanks, BC Parks! Never mind that Vaccinium isn't a family....

Ask Paul Slichter; his contact info is on the bottom of this page: http://science.halleyhosting.com/nature ... /heath.htm

I've seen something like that east of Goat Rocks, a little north of Surprise Lake. I ate them and survived. Kind of small berries and not a lot per plant.

Maybe we should call them Jerry Berries.
