In certain dark forested areas, i hear a low "Woob WOOB Woob woob woob" sound from up in the trees. It's always 5 "woobs" and repeats every minute or two. It can be likened to the sound you hear when you blow over the mouth of a large jug. I can never tell where it comes from and cannot sight any bird.

Anyone know what this is?

It's a grouse. Those sounds carry a looooong way.

I never noticed that it was usually (or always) five "woobs"!

You would usually hear them in the spring and maybe early summer, not usually this time of year unless one of them is feeling particularly amorous for some reason.

Aha!
I'm sure I've seen this discussed before, but the video settles it: Yep, been hearing that for years, and figured it was grouses. Grouci? Whatever.

I'll have to start listening for the series of 5 though, I hadn't noticed that.
