What's at the end of the McGee Creek TH road?

The purpose of this forum is to help people identify things they've seen while out hiking: wildflowers, trees, birds, insects, small animals, animal tracks, even geographical features like buttes or streams

What's at the end of the McGee Creek TH road?

Post by adamschneider » November 29th, 2017, 5:33 pm

At the end of the dirt road that leads to the McGee Creek Trailhead (southeast of Lolo Pass), there's some sort of structure with what looks like a corrugated metal roof. Per Google Earth imagery, it's been there since at least 2010 but wasn't there in 2005. What is it??

For what it's worth, the Forest Service's digital maps have the road beyond the trailhead labeled as McGee Creek Overlook (actually "Mc Gee Creek Ovelook" :?).

Does the trail go by the building?

Do you spend all your time looking for structures on satellite images? :)

http://bark-out.org/sites/default/files ... ill_PA.pdf says
Cascade huts have a recreational structure (portable cabin) on FSR 1800-640. Although not
within the project area, recreational visitors attempting to access this structure may be indirectly
affected by the increase in logging related traffic within the area.

An example of one of the huts, not necessarily this one:

I believe I came across another one of these south of Mt Hood.

I was cleaning up trails and roads on OpenStreetMap.

ahh.... good find :)

I've heard of those huts. I thought they were temporary or seasonal. I wonder if one could rent them now.

So, from Cascade Huts' photo gallery, this is exactly what's at the end of the McGee Creek TH road:

Mystery solved.

Looks like the McGee Creek one (CH calls it "Lolo Pass") gets removed in the winter, but the other three are available all year: http://www.cascadehuts.com/reserve.php

It ain't cheap: $204 per night.

Apparently the Barlow Butte and Barlow Ridge huts are removed in the summer; they are missing in the 07/2017 Google aerial series. The White River hut however is in that photo series.
