This last weekend (July 1 & 2) I succeeded in checking off another one of my Skamania summits. This was an obscure peak, known only by its elevation: 5022. It is essentially the next summit NE of Badger Peak in the Dark Divide. This map shows the location: 5022 map. Without boring you with all the details, it is a 6 1/2 mile boring road walk, then about 1 1/2 miles & 1,120 feet, seemingly straight up.
Seems I was sitting there, somewhat below the summit, enjoying the views, and gloating in the sure knowledge that I had to have been the first human up on this summit in a long, long time. “Surely a few of the miners, back around 1900 had to have been up here”. That's when I saw this:
The marker on the map shows the location. You can see that it is not the summit. It is not a section line intersection. Being in the Dark Divide, it shouldn't be a timber harvest marker. There were a total of 4 trees around the little stake (2 circles) that were festooned with various aluminum markers, I am guessing so that it could be found again from any angle of approach. I could not find one that had any notations. In all my days out in the woods, I have never seen anything like this. I am open to any and all suggestions.
What is it??
What is it??

D.B. Cooper's grave, of course...unless it's actually a sasquatch teleportation site.
Re: What is it??
More completely obvious possibilities that I totally skipped past!
I did write to the Cowlitz Valley RD. Have not gotten a reply yet.

Re: What is it??
I've seen these on trees in multiple locations along trails, but not that many in one place. USFS is marking the area for some reason, but it has not been clear to me.
