Interesting bit of rock

Geologists! What's going on with this rock? A white patina (thin and plasticky) on top of aerated volcanic stuff (found in the Nesmith area). Looks like some sort of volcanic fusion and heating going on, as if it were trying to make a geode.

I was hoping someone would chime in on this. I've seen the same kind of thing on the east side of hwy 35. I always assumed it was some kind of fungus but it just didn't seem quite right for that.

I believe its silica deposited in cracks in the rock by rain water. In other words its a little mini quartz vein.
