In Forest Park, on Firelane 15, just south of the lookout point near Kielhorn Meadow, I saw this tree with carved out squares in it. I understand Pileated Woodpeckers cut these square holes, but these were much larger than I've seen (some tall and deep enough to hide a pop can in) and in a live tree. They were also freshly made, judging from the shavings around the base of the tree. I didn't see this on any nearby trees. Is this from a woodpecker gone mad, or something else?
