Strange tree cuts

Post by stevenrbi » October 19th, 2015, 1:23 pm

While hiking through the old Dollar lake fire zone on the Mazama trail a few weeks ago I noticed some interesting cut patterns on some of the fallen trees. Both the stump and the fallen tree appear to have the same pattern so it looks like it was done intentionally when the tree was felled. Does anyone know why these trees would have been cut this way?

Generally it would be a bit deeper, and have the stump cut closer to ground level, but it's to encourage rot to get the stump to decompose faster

I think that this question has been asked previously and that the answer was that these cuts allow the stump to decompose more rapidly.

I think those cuts are there to promote rot.
