Mt Hood mystery #47...

The purpose of this forum is to help people identify things they've seen while out hiking: wildflowers, trees, birds, insects, small animals, animal tracks, even geographical features like buttes or streams

Mt Hood mystery #47...

Post by Koda » November 20th, 2011, 3:13 pm

In 2007 I did a backpack around Mt Hood with a friend. On the section of trail heading up to McNeil Point, I took this photograph of Mt Hood. I've always been impressed with this view, capturing IMO a quite impressive view on the mountain and the rugged Muddy Fork Canyon. I have not been back to this spot since.

Although I have viewed this photo many times, just yesterday I noticed something that stuck out. the number 47 is so clearly displayed on the mountain...

has anyone else seen this? Please share your photo here and/or any explanations.

How weird is that

The "4" is partly covered by snow August of this year:

Don't see it in Jerry's but for sure see the 47 in Koda's.

Too cool...

Hmmm. In my photo (August 2010), the 7 shows up, but the 4 is partially covered by snow:

Looks like my picture was taken in the afternoon after 2:00 p.m. Perhaps it's a memorial?

In the 2009 film Star Trek, the Enterprise was built in Sector 47 of the Riverside Shipyards, and 47 Klingon ships are said to have been destroyed by Nero's ship, the Narada (authoritative source: Wikipedia).

I'm sure it's just a random rock/shadow formation

But, now we have to go up and examine

Plus, it's on (actually below) the route from Yocum to McNeil Point

here is a screen shot from Google Earth with 2005 imagery...
I can see a line, with the rest of it buried under snow. The line would be consistent with location and the (#) 7 portion in my photo. I put a red arrow marking the line.

I couldn't find any other dated images in GE with less snow... but this one seems to correlate

agree, but still interesting. my image captures a really crisp number 47. other images being posted here correlate...

yup... 8-) will have to wait till next year, if it melts out.
