Post by flixter » June 9th, 2017, 5:20 pm

The reason I'm posting the following web links is to help those of you who like to video the eclipse
but have some questions on how to go about doing this.
This YouTube just came out on June 08,2017 as so is one the best youtube videos tutorials, that has
come out so far explaining on how to video capture the total eclipse.

There are apps like Photopills and The Photographer's Ephemeris where you can plan where you are going to be during the eclipse to capture the landscape background you want included in your shot.
Unfortunately we will be up in Alaska hiking and are going to miss it.

Here is a screenshot from Photopills on my phone which shows the planner function where you see the exact path of the sun at a certain time from any location you choose
The thin yellow line over Mt Jefferson if the position of the sun for 10:12 am on the day of the eclipse.

So let's say you want Mt Jefferson in the lower right corner of your photo, you would click on the spot on the satellite map and then set the time of the eclipse and you would see where the sun would be in the sky in reference to Mt Jefferson. You can zoom in on the map to see exactly where you are going to take your pictures from. You and the 1,000 other backpackers who had the same idea that it.

both apps cost money, but they also do a lot more than just show you where celestial objects will be in the sky.
The mountains are calling and I must go.

Here's NASA's useful interactive map of the eclipse route:
