Variable Netural Density Filter

Post by rainrunner » August 4th, 2013, 10:53 pm

I used my Vivitar variable density filter for the first time this weekend and was pleasantly suprised with how well it worked for me.
I preset my camera to iso 100 - f/11 - 2 second exposure, then I used the live view and adjusted the filter until I saw an exposure that I liked.
I was able to take this picture at noon and still get a slow shutter speed. There are better quality varible nd filters on the market, but since I am happy with this Vivitar filter and the results I got.

Nice shots!

My frustration with the cheaper filters is some of the color casting they cause.. but more so with the coating and how well (or not well as the case may be) they repel water/fingerprints/etc.

I had one of the middle of the road Hoya CPL and as soon as it would get water on it I would be done shooting for the day. But with the HD I can easily blow the water off with my giotto and get right back to it. Did you have any water issues with this one?
I take pictures sometimes. And sometimes I post them here:

No problem, but that is because I didn't get close to any spray, I stayed back and used my telephoto lens to get my close up shots.
