Charley, thanks for your awesomely informative replies! Between these and everyone else's comments, I feel much better equipped to explore my options. Incidentally, I'm curious about skiing, too, and will probably try to rent a pair sometime this winter, just to try out that falling/crashing stuff for myself :)

Awesome! Being out in the snow really changed my life (I was born and raised in Tennessee). Now I don't spend all winter trying to find dry, snow-free places. Instead, I try to find cold, snowy places.

Last year, my buddy and I skied a familiar part of the PCT after sunset, after a long day of breaking trail in 1-2' of fresh snow. There's nothing quite like these experiences!
