Suunto 9 - No gradient metric?

Just got a Suunto 9 Baro version. Won't go into the details about everything its capable of because I'm sure many of you know the details of the watch. Its almost perfect. For one minor issue.
No Gradient metric?? I find this completely dumbfounding. For something catered to the trail/ultrarunning, hiking, backcountry skiing, and you could say even light mountaineering it doesn't make sense that a barometric watch isn't able to measure something as simple as the gradient of the current slope you're on.
Am I missing something? Is it actually a feature and I am just making a fool out of myself?
