Ice Axe size adjustment

Post by hikerguy » August 11th, 2016, 10:08 am

I have a 70cm Black Diamond Raven Pro that I want to shorten to 65cm. Has anyone done this? Have you found any websites that can show how it is done? I think the hardest part would be to remove the spike. Would epoxy be use to reattach the spike?

Why not just sell it and buy a shorter one?

I'm often surprised at how inexpensive ice axes are. And they last almost forever. Yeah, just get a new one. My first axe was a 70, which I soon realized was longer than I wanted, but now I use it for difficult offtrail hikes, so glad it's still in my quiver.

I sometimes envy golfers. They get to take a whole bunch of clubs, and pick the best one for each shot. At most, I can justify packing two axes, but generally have to decide which one I'll take.
