I like Andrew Skurka's take on trail lunch... he breaks the day up into two-hour segments and has a snack every two hours throughout the day. I've been doing that system for the last couple of years on our week-long backpacks. On our recent 8-day trip into the Gardiner Basin in Sequoia NP, my typical daily snack bag (a 1-quart zip-lock freezer bag) contained:
  • 1 - Large serving of Jerky (I found an excellent Korean BBQ pork jerky that was amazing)
    1 - Kind Bar
    1 - Laura Bar
1 - serving home dehydrated fruit (bananas, apples, strawberries, plums)
1 - Gel Shot for a quick boost before a hard climb
    1 - Snikers Bar
1 - serving salted roasted nuts
1 - package of electrolyte replacement drink mix
Each morning I remove a lunch bag from the bear can and keep it in the top of my pack. At each water break, or every two hours I pull out one or two items and eat while rehydrating.

Is that available widely?

I think you can get the pork jerky at Costco.

Winco has powdered hummus. I added my own paprika and cumin, all into a baggie. Add water to consistency you like, and have with crackers. I also picked up a few Subway olive oil packets. That was good.

Amazon also stocks powdered hummus in 4.2oz packages. It was cheapest to buy a six-pack versus the individual packs so the remaining packs I am throwing to the bottom of my chest freezer until next year.

https://www.amazon.com/Harmony-Valley-C ... B00650ISK8

That package size is perfect for two people and works well with pita chips.
