What are the best microspikes for boots? I've had the chains before but want something else.
Where did you get yours? Cost?
Thanks!

Re: Best Microspikes?
I am very happy with my Kahtoola microspikes.

Ditto that! Not the cheapest but the best IMHO!kaltbluter wrote:I am very happy with my Kahtoola microspikes.
There are cheaper alternatives that work well on the flat or slopes that are not too steep (ie. Glacier Boot Chains) but hard to beat Kahoola for anything steep & icy!
Re: Best Microspikes?
I also like Katoola Microspikes much better than the 'studded' traction concepts that I have tried. I've been using the same pair for three years now and they still look brand new. Easy to put on, and they stay on your boots. I've walked on solid ice at Eagle Creek with Katoola microspikes with zero slippage.Guy wrote:Ditto that! Re: Best Microspikes?
Is there more than one Microspikes? In general, YakTrax, etc are good for urban environments. Microspikes (Katoolah) are good for hiking. And crampons are good for everything above Microspikes.

I prefer screws in my boot soles (not to be confused with "screw me boots" ). Cost is about .05 per screw and I am able to customize the settings for any condition.

Re: Best Microspikes?
Not to speak for windmtnpete, and I've never done it myself, but the way I've seen it done is to simply buy some short hex-head screws and screw 'em directly into the cleats on the bottom of the boots. I guess it requires boots/shoes with a thick enough sole. Adjusting for conditions would mean changing how many screws go in each sole.
One reason I've never tried it is it's an all-or-none strategy---you can't take them off and on as needed on a hike.
