This is one of the hikes featured in William Sullivan's "Hiking Oregon's History," a fascinating book. He lectured on it at the MHNF HQ in Sandy a couple of years ago--thoroughly enjoyable!
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey
