Friends of the Gorge say Farewell to Nancy Russell

Post by Jane » September 21st, 2008, 11:56 am

Friends says farewell to visionary leader
Nancy Russell 1932-2008.

Friends of the Columbia Gorge Founder Nancy Russell passed away September 19, 2008. Her unwavering commitment to Gorge protection led to the creation of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

For nearly three decades, Nancy Russell was the driving force of Friends of the Columbia Gorge. She led the efforts to create the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in 1986 and was later instrumental in ensuring the public purchase of over 38,000 acres of land and personally purchasing over 30 properties to protect them from development. Her legacy to Gorge landscapes is incalculable.
