PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A 26-year-old hiker who fell down a rock face near Oregon's Multnomah Falls is providing difficult to rescue. The man is reportedly uninjured and stuck on a rock shelf in the area east of Portland. A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Astoria tried to rescue him Monday evening but Coast Guard officials say the hoist cable wasn't long enough. The Oregonian says Multnomah County sheriff's deputies are trying to reach him by land. He remains in contact with rescuers via cell phone. ___ Information from: The Oregonian, http://www.oregonlive.com ©2010 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Rescuers are having a devil of a time getting to a 26-year-old hiker stuck on a rock shelf near Multnomah Falls.

The hiker, who is uninjured, fell down a rock face earlier today and can't climb out, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Astoria reached the scene at 5:51 p.m. Rotoring above the rugged hillsides, the crew of the MH-60 Jayhawk discovered that their hoist cable wasn't long enough to reach the hiker. They pulled away 24 minutes later, officials said.

Multnomah County sheriff's deputies have launched a ground search to reach the man, who remains in contact with a cell phone.

Seriously... He's un-injured, you know exactly where he is, the weather's incredible...and you need a helicopter... While its officially "off-limits" for private parties to rappel Multnomah, S and R do drills on it every year. What on earth could be the problem? Do they feel the slope is going to slide with the weight of a rescuer on it too? That's all I can think of.
