Comet C/2022 E3 Can you see it?

Post by BurnsideBob » February 12th, 2023, 10:07 am

The much ballyhooed Comet C/2022 E3, aka "The Green Comet" is now visible after sunset, but not by naked eye.

I unsuccessfully tried to capture it night of 10 February. Last night, with somewhat clearer skies, I tried again: 130 mm lense, f 9, asa 6400, 15 second exposure. I was able to identify the comet in my photos, but only by comparing my image with a star atlas.

Last night the comet's brightness was 6.61. Maybe you could spot it with big aperture binocs. I couldn't. But with the 15 second exposure time, I could get it in an image.

What with the zoom and exposure time, star trailing is unavoidable without a clock drive.

Stay warm if you give it a shot.
