If you request the public records for the case you will find the whole thing is even more messed up. Lewis County really screwed this up.

maybe since they didn't investigate initially, they now don't have the evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt

in that link Nate posted, someone said their only recourse now is the election of the prosecutor, except they don't live there

what a mystery

an official told the family that their only recourse was elections, but I'd say a better recourse is to get the media interested

It would appear the dog wasn't shot, but stabbed? so the couple shot the hiker then stabbed the dog?? or vice versa???

something definitely appears fishy with deputy McGinty and the second vet (Otteman). They created an exit hole to make it look like a bullet wound? And McGinty called off anyone else from investigating the scene?

hopefully they'll continue to investigate even though evidence is old. Get rid of McGinty and Otteman maybe.

What a mess.

After reading the articles, it looks like there were many failures in the investigation. Whether they add up to malfeasance isn't as clear. However, if there actually is a new, second wound on the dog, that seems like evidence of tampering- as if to prove the Ansbach's two-lives-with-one-bullet story true.
Believe it or not, I barely ever ride a mountain bike.

I can see how now it's impossible to prove beyond a reasonable doubt those two people murdered the hiker

The Wall Street Journal has a big story about it. This "archive" link avoids the paywall: https://archive.is/H5Ej0
