The fire was definitely visible from the summit of East Crater (Indian Heaven) yesterday. And we returned to camp at Bear Lake, in gusty tinderbox conditions, to a group of campers with a campfire. I absolutely cannot believe that people start fires in these conditions.

Including the Nakia Creek Fire (which exploded to 1500+ acres over the weekend), there are now FOUR named fires near the Clark/Skamania border:

The Siouxon Fire was started by an abandoned campfire a few weeks ago in "an unburned island within the Big Hollow Fire scar." Firefighters decided to just leave it be and let it burn itself out, but it looks like it has now spawned the Black Hole Fire to the west. (I'm just guessing about the origins of Black Hole, but given the recent east wind event, it seems likely.)

The Sunset Fire, near Sunset Falls Campground, was no doubt started by more idiots who just HAD to have a campfire. :x

Looks like the fire may have been started by two couples setting off fireworks. Unbelievable.

Not the first time and it certainly won't be the last. The constant abandoned-campfires-causing-wildfires situation in the West is infuriating.

If only there had been a recent, high profile example of a fire started by fireworks. It could have served as a cautionary tale that would have surely prevented these good folks for making this mistake.

I see no mention of fireworks in that article.
Last week, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources said it believed the fire was "human-caused" as there was no lightning when it broke out. Officials said they were still trying to determine exactly how the flames sparked.

Here is one that it is explicitly stated they believe it was caused by fireworks:

I was at work when it was starting so I got to see the smoke plume grow over the foothills!
