Sturgill Fire in the Wallowas

Post by drm » September 6th, 2022, 3:53 pm

This fire is a bit above 14,000 acres and is burning in the north Minam area. It is west of North Minam Meadows and the trail to Green Lake is closed. If it continues to spread, it will next affect the Bowman Loop area. But I guess it could be affecting views and air quality now. Anybody have a reports from a recent visit?

The Double Creek fire is burning near Imnaha and has closed Hat Point, Freezeout Saddle, etc.

Argh. My buddy and I have a saying: "Hike it before it burns."

The Bear Creek area of the Wallowas was on my list. I guess you can't get everywhere first. Hopefully it's a pleasant mosaic burn.
Believe it or not, I barely ever ride a mountain bike.

Same. But there's never enough time to hike everything before it burns. Every year I watch with sadness as another place burns that I didn't get a chance to visit.

I've been keeping an eye on the webcam over there and it has not been looking good.

Sometimes it can take years for burned areas to re-open to the public. Even when they do sometimes the Forest Service clears the trails and sometimes they just abandon them to the hundreds of fallen snags. Look at the east side of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. After the 2003 B&B Fire the FS gave up on so many of the trails over there. Volunteers have worked to clear some, but others are lost forever.

yeah, good point

I'm not arguing we should have fires, just trying to find something positive :)

You still can't go up the Tanner Butte Trail. I wonder if they'll open that up

Sturgill Fire is above 19,000 acres now and listed as 0% contained. I believe Two Pan is closed as is all of West Eagle. But we have no idea at this point how much of the burned area is high intensity.
