We can surmise a hiker fell, but apparently not determined yet.

I took Chip's tone as critical of the often poor quality of reporting, not any disrespect for the sad demise of the person found deceased. Did I miss something?

Actually, my intention was neither.
I wouldn't mock a person who fell off a cliff to their demise, and in this particular instance I wasn't criticizing the infotainment industry.
