I think when I hike by myself (which is almost always) I'm a little more careful because there's no one else to bail me out

So, I'm actually safer by myself

A partner can call, or go get, help if you need it (and are unable to make that call yourself).

My favorite weight-saving tip is to not carry water unless you are actually on a dry hike.
