Makes me wonder what was actually gained from putting these markers in? Any links to research? Cannot imagine they've moved much in the past 30 years

On a volcano, prior to eruption, the entire volcano expands, or one side of it expands. If it starts expanding faster, it's more likely an eruption will happen soon.
This is poorly understood, so if an eruption happens looking at the expansion beforehand can make it easier to predict the next time.
So, if there are a bunch of benchmarks around the mountain they can research this better. Or better would be to have electronic devices that automatically send back data.
