Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)

The Forest Service asked TKO to post an alert tonight about a fire adjacent to the Eagle Creek Trail (in the Gorge) somewhere south of the wilderness boundary (which is roughly at WyEast Creek, or just beyond 4.5 mile bridge). The trail is now closed at the wilderness boundary. They are asking folks to stay away from the trail, if possible, while crews fight the fire.

I'll post more info as it become available. Thanks, everyone! And welcome to the 2017 fire season... :?

Tom

Looks like the Corbett fire is burning right along the Horsetail Falls trail just east of the tunnel. If it gets close enough to Oneonta Gorge, expect to see a LOT of logs fall in from above. The log jam is only going to get worse. :(

Now, a good week later, what's the progress report? Is the trail reopened? Thanks!

I've heard that the fire has picked up in the last day and is generating more smoke in the area than it has before.

Yeah, that system that came in Wed night really whipped things up. (We were on Barrett and almost got blown off.) On the way down, the smoke haze had clearly intensified mightily, both through the Gorge and towards Adams. Photos taken Thur on Barrett clearly showed a plume rising next to Tanner. :(

That's disappointing news. The last update I saw from the GRGFS said the fire was under control as of July 14th. Is this a different fire that has since picked up in intensity?
