Yellowstone National Park has fined a Chinese man $1,000 for walking off boardwalk and collecting water at Mammoth Hot Springs earlier this week. Yellowstone spokeswoman Charissa Reid said the incident happened Monday night, and that officials are still assessing the damage caused. A witness reported seeing the man break through the terrace’s travertine crust and the man admitted collecting water from the spring. “It wasn’t just like a short little jaunt,” Reid said. A park news release said law enforcement found the man after the witness reported him. The man admitted to collecting the water and that he didn’t read the safety information given to him at the park’s gate. In addition to the $1,000 fine, he will also have to pay a $30 court processing fee. Reid said the process was expedited for this incident because the man had planned to leave the country soon after.
This is the latest in a string of incidents in Yellowstone where visitors have run afoul of park regulations. Two men were fined $735 for putting a bison calf in their car last month. Four men who film adventure videos were charged for walking on the surface of Grand Prismatic. A court hearing on the status of that case will be held via telephone in July.
