I tend to agree. I think this kind of just seemed like an attempt to make some think twice about attempting it, which I am all for. I still want it to get built, though.

I believe someday the trail will be built, but according to this website the trail route is actually closed to the public.

I have a question to anyone who can answer it. The site linked immediately above says "The tunnels, trestles, and rails are hazardous and have not been maintained since the 2007 flood event." From the pictures I have seen I am frankly stunned that the structures have degraded that much in less than ten years. What kind of maintenance would normally have to be done to prevent this?

If I understand the history of this rail line, virtually no amount of maintenance can keep a trail or rail line functional (IMO). IIRC, The rail line has a history of being constantly rebuilt, I believe this is why the last flood event they decided to abandon it altogether. I’ve hiked a portion of this a few times mostly in the early spring, when it was raining in places the runoff from the canyon walls was like a river in itself, in many places the rail bed was underwater. They built that rail literally right on the river, bad call. My guess is if they ever build an official trail in here it wont be the ideal streamside trail in most places….

Had the very same thoughts, as I listened to this on the radio the other day. But it seems to be a pervasive fear. MSHI uses this rationale (North County Rescue aversion to working there) as one reason for keeping non-paying citizens off public land on the crater view climbs.
