Frat boys in the woods

Not hiking per se, but it appears that a U of O frat decided to try their hand at Leaving No Trace.
"There are no restroom facilities at the island, so it appeared the visitors created one under a tent," the Times reported.

They seem to have just abandoned their tents and bags, because in addition to being complete idiots, they also are apparently made of money.

Yeah, upwards of 1000 people gathering on houseboats? Judging by all the stuff they abandoned and the fact that no one knows who or where they are, we can only hope some sort of biblical wrath-of-god-type calamity befell them.

what I want to know is what exactly happened that caused them to drop everything and leave so suddenly? Like everyone, all at once just abandoned ship (per-se).

Could be as simple as "It started raining."

college kids - incompletely developed brains - at least in my experience

somebody apologized so I don't think the identity is in question

I just wish I knew about it so I could scrounge for usable gear. Except probably their gear wouldn't have suited me - heavy or whatever. Maybe give to Goodwill or something.

I read elsewhere that the tents were full of vomit.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. In Nevada Barr's book "The Rope," she discusses the deplorable behavior of that age group in Glen Canyon. What made this incident newsworthy is that they foolishly left the college logo behind so authorities could identify the violators.

The appropriate punishment is community service cleaning up one of the parks this summer. And if they want to plead affluenza (too rich to be responsible), then they can write a check for the salaries of the staff needed to clean up the place this summer. If you can't afford to right the check, you don't have affluenza. It's just that simple.

Ironically I bet if there was a greenpeace / save the planet march n PDX many of these same morons would be there marching to "save the planet".

Obviously these aren't the folks Bernie is talking about who need the promise of free college based on what they can afford to throw away.
