These fast runs around Mt. Hood seem to clock out at 5.75 to 6.0 mph.

It's pretty amazing anyone can run on rugged terrain that fast, but personally, I liked my 3-nights and 4-days on the trail just fine. I had a heavier pack, for sure, but I liked watching the evening alpenglow.

I've heard about those PCT-in-a-month runs and have to shake my head. Sure, there are some sections that you may want to get thru without blinking too many times, but there are other sections that a saunter is quicker than I would like to do.

Congratulations to anyone who can get around the mountain in less time than I am at work each day... but
I'm going for the record of: most scenic miles & hours in nature.

why waste a perfectly good backpack by doing it in one day

I am too slow and weak to genuinely comprehend any of the great feats, but in any discussion of "mountain" and "fast" I'll drop a note of Ueli Steck:

Yeah!!.... absolutely fantastic! I think I remember SpeedShop (ebishop) mentioning this speed climber on a Loony hike with Sean & myself. Now I understand. He seems like a really cool badass!
