WTA Trail Work Parties Coming up

Post by Ryan Ojerio » April 5th, 2019, 10:24 am

Hi Hikers,

Trailwork season is ramping up and if you'd like to join us on a work party this spring or summer, here are a few of the many opportunities this year. To see all the events happening across the state, check out: https://www.wta.org/volunteer/schedule/ Note that our day trips are posted 6-8 weeks in advance, whereas all our multi-day trips for the year are already posted.

- Cheers, Ryan

Coyote Wall, Columbia River Gorge
May 11, Saturday
Info and RSVP: https://bit.ly/2UBTFz9
Situated just upstream from White Salmon on the Columbia River, the Coyote Wall area offers great views of the Columbia River Gorge along with enchanting stands of oak, cascading waterfalls, dramatic basalt outcroppings and profuse wildflowers in the spring. On this work party we'll do annual maintenance and drainage improvements.

Quartz Creek in the Dark Divide Roadless Area
Info and RSVP*: https://bit.ly/2K8ZKPs
July 27 and 28, Weekend w/optional campout & potluck
In the heart of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest where Bigfoot roams, the Quartz Creek and Quartz Creek Butte trails lead into some fantastic old-growth in the largest roadless area in the Gifford Pinchot. Volunteers needed to do annual maintenance, brushing, tread work and drainage improvements; come for one or two days.

Mount St. Helens Backcountry Response Team: Deadman Lake
July 30 to August 4th
Info and RSVP: https://bit.ly/2UgkxFD
Crossing a high ridge just north of Mount St. Helens, the Goat Mountain trail offers some of the best ridge top hiking, wildflowers and scenic vistas in the area. But the rewards must be earned with a 2 mile 1,500-foot climb right out of the trailhead to gain the ridge crest. Near Deadman's Lake, the trail is rutted by erosion. When we arrive on scene we'll assess each section and re-work the tread to be sustainable. Pack support will be generously supplied by Back Country Horsemen of Washington and additional financial support from the Mount St. Helens Institute.

Cultus Creek Trail at Indian Heaven
September 7th and 8th, Weekend w/optional campout & potluck
Info and RSVP*: https://bit.ly/2K8ZKPs
Camp at the Cultus Creek Trailhead and enter into the Indian Heaven Wilderness each to help restore this badly rutted route. (We plan to set up on Friday so you can come down then too). Volunteers welcome to come for one or multiple days.

*Frontcountry day trips are posted for registration 6 weeks prior to the trip date
