Volunteer with TKO! Madrone Wall

Post by Shoofly » October 31st, 2016, 5:52 pm

Madrone Wall, Clackamas County
Saturday & Sunday, November 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 & 20, 9:00 AM-3:00 PM

The Madrone Wall, located on Hwy 224 2.2 miles east of Carver, is a 1,000-foot long, 80-foot high rock wall that was used as a quarry in the 1950s and has been closed to the public since 1997. It was popular with rock climbers but Clackamas County, which owns the land, closed the site in 1997 while it pursued a plan to quarry the site. After nearly two decades, Clackamas County now plans to open the site as a public park in Summer 2017. In August 2016, the Oregon National Guard completed a 2-week training activity at the site which created the quarter mile access road and gravel parking lot at the base of the Madrone Wall. Additional work is needed to ensure the site is ready for park opening and this includes upgrading existing old user trails and building some new sections. Please note that the site is currently posted “No Trespassing,” and Clackamas County permission is required to enter the site.

The project will involve building two trails from the parking lot to the base of the climbing wall. This is a short (~1/4 mile) but steep, rocky access. One trail will use an old user trail in some areas but will need significant improvement. For the second proposed trail, there will be areas of completely new trail construction. Additionally, we have also been asked to improve the narrow trail that runs along the base of the wall.

Volunteer crew size for each date is limited; registration is required. Sign up to volunteer here, or contact [email protected] for more information.
