Friends of Mt Adams Hike Day - Sept. 10 2016

Post by drm » July 25th, 2016, 5:33 pm

The P.C.T. and cross-country to The Bumper

Leader: Dean Myerson (respond here or to [email protected] or PM)

Saturday, September 10th, 2016

[Because Friends of Mt Adams first offered these hikes to our supporters, hike #1 (Shorthorn Trail to Crofton Ridge) is already filled and my hike, #2 is half full. There are five slots still available in this hike.]

Our hike on the enormous west side of Mt. Adams to a lava bedrock promontory called The Bumper is long and tough, but well worth the effort! With a round-trip distance of 14 miles and an elevation gain of 2636 feet from the trailhead on Forest Rd. 23 (el. 3854 ft.), the hike is mostly on the well-maintained Pacific Crest Trail. But the last mile or so will be off trail, on both gentle and steep slopes, with a rocky section on the final climb to the top of The Bumper (elev. 6490 ft.). We’ll have fantastic, up-close views of Mt. Adams, plus vistas from Mt. Rainier to Mt. Hood and beyond.

By September, streams may be dry so you should carry all the water you will need with you. Participants should be fit, ready for this hike, and be able to keep a good pace.

Group size limit 12. We’ll meet at the Trout Lake School parking lot at 7:30 a.m. for car-pooling. Depart promptly at 8:00, and return to Trout Lake by around 5:00 p.m. Sign-up sheet, maps, and complete details will be provided by the leader. If you want to spend the night before in Trout Lake (lodging or camping), we can help with suggestions.
