Volunteer with TKO at Timberline Lodge on September 21

Post by Shoofly » September 11th, 2013, 5:38 am

Join Trailkeepers of Oregon on Saturday, September 21st at the historic Timberline Lodge to deconstruct user trails. We will be transplanting native plants from different locations (e.g., from ski runs) to the closed trails to restore closed trails to their natural condition. No experience is needed; TKO provides instructions and equipment. This is a good chance to learn more about restoring areas to natural conditions or, if you have taken one of Curtis' trail deconstruction classes, to practice what you have learned!

More information from the Forest Service:

Currently, a contractor is replacing the crumbling paved trails around Timberline Lodge with packed gravel Class 3 to 5 hiker/pedestrian trails. Short realignments in a few sections will be necessary to address steep grades, accommodate ADA standards and designate established trails for skier traffic. Existing asphalt trails that will not be incorporated in the trail design will have the asphalt removed. Additionally, the trails will be contoured to match the existing slopes. User trails and previous trails will be roped off and signed restoration. I am looking for volunteers to transplant plants and wildflowers from the ski runs to restore existing trails. This is just the start of the trail development and rehabilitation around Timberline Lodge.
