Deschutes River Hike May 11-13

Post by Wonky » May 1st, 2018, 10:48 am

Hello! I am planning a 2 1/2 day- 2 night trip to Deschutes River. Leaving Salem by 2 after work...

I'm fairly new and have only ever solo backpacked, but have done multi-nighters before. I'm up for making this trip more of a group. I'm not experienced at planning group hikes as a solo trip so you will have to bear with me.

I thought about doing the Middle Metolius River Hike http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide ... River_Hike but I did that hike last month. Pretty place wonderfully loud river, only did a single night and didn't go as far as I wanted, so might be easily convinced to go back instead.

I heard that the ticks are awful this year, hoping that DEET and permethrin will keep me fair clear. Any suggests of things to watch for, or to avoid, welcome.

Thank you for reading.

I had a fun trip. The water sucked even after filtering. I'll try it again when it is cooler.

I bet it was hot.

I've never noticed the water is bad, but since it drains Bend, Madras, Redmond,... I assume it's a bit contaminated. I wouldn't drink it all the time.

It was hot, but never miserable. I didn't do a good job of using sun screen.

It did have a bit of petrol smell to it.

The Harris Home has fallen over.

Yeah, I was there a few months ago, the Harris home is collapsing in slow motion. I used to walk inside a bit.

I now always wear long sleeves and pants - sun and bugs

Sunscreens aren't very effective at UVA and UVB which ages your skin and giver you skin cancer
