Oregon Wild- Pine Bench (Boulder Creek) Hike

Post by Oregon Wild » June 25th, 2014, 1:41 pm

Join us this Sunday, June 29, to explore an old-growth Ponderosa pine forest perched above the North Umpqua River in an area recovering beautifully from a 1996 fire.

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 6 miles
Elevation Gain: 800 feet
Leader: Chandra LeGue
Location: Umpqua National Forest, along the North Umpqua River

Follow the trail into the heart of the Boulder Creek Wilderness, just north of the North Umpqua Highway, on this hike to Pine Bench. We’ll travel through a great example of a dry forest burned in a natural mosaic fire in 1996, and another in 2008.

Now recovering beautifully, the forest here includes giant sugar pines and Douglas-firs, and the namesake bench covered in an open-grown old-growth Ponderosa pine, and views of Boulder Creek’s canyon. The trail can be difficult in places due to down trees and poison oak, but is well worth the hike!
