Cool Creek To Devils Peak - 5-27-2013

Post by discodan7700 » May 24th, 2013, 8:42 pm

Portlandhikers, Snowchasers, Modern-day conquerors,

Join me for an expedition to Devils Peak from the Cool Creek Trail.

This trip is all about the big win at the end. I've been told this trail is steep and will likely have snow starting at approx 4000 ft. Spoke with ZigZag Ranger ChrisD. He said, "be careful, don't get lost, email me pictures from the top".

Plan is to be on the trail by 7:00 AM at the latest. Hoping to be back at the trailhead by early afternoon, 2:00 pm at the latest. Hoping to have lunch at the top. Bring your own lunch ;)

My understanding is that the biggest hazard in this area is getting lost and managing the snow. As such, I'll be going heavy on nav tools and snow gear.

here's a link to the USDA trail info.

Note that this hike is listed as "most difficult" in the trail descr of the pdf. So bring your A game, pahleeeeeze?

Over the next two days I'll be collecting route data and posting it here in case it's helpful for folks considering to join in.

Winter isn't all gone, not for us.

much love,

-daniel-

Thanks anyway Jerry! Good luck! Next time, I hope.

Regarding the liquid diet: Just remember, this too shall pass. and pass again, and pass again, and pass again :)

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Route Planning: Cool Creek To Devils Peak - 5-27-2013

Finalizing plans for tomorrow's great adventure. Please let me know if you intend to join.

The ele profile for the intended route is surprising. As you will see below, generally, this hike is no harder than AngelsRest. However, I do see little sharp edges on the graph that would indicate very short steep sections.

That said, I suspect that the weather report will be the biggest downside for some. However, for me, I'm looking forward to it. I love the rain. :)

Thanks to both Jerry and Karl for providing gpx files for the intended route. I ended up using Karl's gpx because it required slightly less tidying of the data. The only changes I made to Karl's gpx was to rip out the return trip so that the gpx was only 1 way. (It looked prettier on the map that way.)

Here's the pdf from the USDA website to save a few mouse clicks:

Back at home... safe and sound. Had a great time. No snow shoes needed. Rhodies are only starting to bloom at lower ele. Large grove has only started to bud.

Was a solo venture, missed y'all, but cheered myself up by sleeping in a touch, seeing the kids as they woke up, did an extra load of dishes for wifey-pooh before i left, etc...

full TR will be done hopefully late tonight,

-daniel-

EDIT: Uh-oh... Cell phone is not super happy right now after it's rainy adventure. Might be tricky getting a good TR tonight. We'll see.

Photos are fine, videos and gpx tracks are likely unsalvagable...

I've heard folks have some "luck" by stuffing 'em into a bag of rice? Good luck!

It's the display that's failing. Hopefully they'll just swap it out and all my data will remain intact. I'll be moving BCNav to sd before the next trip fo-sho.
