September Visit From PA

Post by KimPA » July 28th, 2008, 4:59 am

Hi, all! We will be flying into PDX late on 9/12. Want to hike most days if possible. We are good up to 10 - 12 miles a day. Trying to put together places to stay as well as the best hikes. Not into huge crowds, like the hidden jems! We have 7 full days to explore! Looking at the Gorge, Mt Hood, the Coast! Jeff recommended Munra Point & this looks perfect. What about Saddle Mountain? Should we make our home base closer to Portland and drive to the hikes, or move around? Not into the city life, so it isn't important for us to be in Portland. Like quiet, country! Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Rent some place near Mount Hood, for example http://www.mthood.info/lodging/mt-hood- ... abins.html

Nice hike - http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org ... Lodge_Hike. Not solitude but the crowds thin out after a mile or so. Check out Timberline Lodge while you're at it. You can just walk through or stop at the bar or restaraunt. Other Mount Hood hikes in the field guide.

Welcome KimPA.

I am originally from Lebanon Co. Pa. and you are gonna love it here. I would find a place at Government Camp to stay a few days that way you could go over the pass and take the highway to Hood River to get to the Gorge. I'd do two days around Mt Hood, Two days in the Gorge staying in Hood River. Then drive to the Coast from there and spend two days exploring the coast. I'd stay in Rockaway..a neat little hamlet without all the commercialism and development. Then take one day to recuperate....cause you are gonna need it. The mountains out here are not the little bumps in Pa!!

Cheers

and have fun

Tony

Small world, Tony! We find every time we go on a trip how much smaller it gets!

Is the Sister's area worth visiting for the hiking, or can we find just as good hikes @ Mt Hood & Gorge?

If you're here for just a few days, you could just stay at Mount Hood and gorge.

Sisters is a bit further away and thus less crowded. Interesting lava fields that you don't see on Mount Hood.

The town of Sisters is about three hours from the Portland airport. Bend about 3.75. Sisters is a neat little town. The climate is different a little dryer and a little warmer. The flora and fauna is different also.

You could spend a week in the Three Sisters Hiking. Might need to extend the vacation or come back next year!!

The amazing thing about Oregon is it is such a diverse landscape with a lot of micro-climates and ecosystems. You have coast, coast range, valley, cascades, gorge, the transition zone, central desert, badlands, high desert, owyhees, blues.....whew!!! Every one of them is unique in their own way!!
