Young’s Creek

Post by Nwcanyoning » September 4th, 2022, 3:06 pm

Explored the upper v slot above the old highway last spring. Very cool spot so close to Portland. Later found out that the area still has a verbalized closure to which we thought was strange but have respected it since.

Nice to get virtual views of those upper falls - but what's a "verbalized closure"?

The latest closure map from the GRGNSA shows no backcountry closures other than the marked trails and Oneonta Gorge (Youngs Creek is off the map, but there's no specific mention of it in the order). I'm wondering if they've opened up for "dispersed" hiking/scrambling or if this is an oversight?

This small area is on State property so on our second trip down in a 4 week period we ran into a ranger who rolled through after some lady at Bridalviel creek made it seem like we were being naughty by running the canyon. He legit said that establishing any anchoring system and climbing fell under some catch all ORS code. Of course, we challenged it and asked to speak to his supervisor because the code sounded more like a “suspicious activity” than anything else. I spoke to the West Gorge supervisor (Glenn Littrell) who said that he’d rather us not be back there for “a year or two” due to the unstable landscape. We will respect it as we (canyoneers) have plenty of other options although Young’s is the best bang for the buck in proximity to Portland.

I have wondered what that gorge held. Thanks for the photos!
