So I was looking at the data on the Washington Lidar portal, and it seems to me that there is an abandoned road that continues South from forest road 406 (which starts between Lookout Mt. and Little Lookout Mt.) to the intersection of DNR roads W2000 and W1490. I'm provisionally calling it the Deer Creek trail, though I believe GPNF already has a trail by that name. (Edit: It was historically called the Green Leaf Trail)
Has anyone seen or heard of this route? Here is an intersection on the trail, you can follow it SE to the intersection of W2000 and W1490. You can follow it North to the end of road 406

I'm excited, I want to explore it later this year. My measurements suggest that it is 6 miles from the road junction to Lookout Mountain. Less than two from the road junction to the point linked above. This could be a really good connection from the East Fork of the Lewis to the Washougal headwaters.

If you go to the Washington lidar link, be aware that the trail can be really faint depending on which year it loads on top. Turn off all the layers except "Cascades South 3DEP 2019 DTM hillshade" and it will pop out at you.

I've explored most of it except the section from the end of 406 to the coordinates you cite. (the yellow dot on the attached map) It's a great area with very good routes. Some of it is a good road still, but would scratch up your car for sure. Here is a GPS derived map I made from a hike 6 years ago. The red lines are my path on that day as I hiked to a few minor peaks in the area.

Thank you!! My photo hosting site, fototime.com, has disappeared, along with all my photos linked to this and other sites.AlpenGlowHiker wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 4:33 amUnder the edit box, you'll see two tabs Options and Attachments; click on the Attachments tab, then you can select "Add files" to upload your track.

Here is the rest of the road grade SW of P2868 from a hike a few days after the above:

Thanks, Don. For years I have thought, "there isn't a connection south from Road 41 until you reach Snag Creek trail" so I didn't think to take another look at the topo maps. Good to hear that the roadbeds are in decent shape.

That's terrible news. I presume you still have the photos. Do you have a way to match them to the fototime identifiers? I mean can you tell which photo http://www.fototime.com/2735A1BB3FA94A3/xlarge.jpg was for example?Don Nelsen wrote: ↑April 12th, 2021, 9:31 amThank you!! I have most of the photos but lost everything taken from Dec. '12 to Jan '14 due to a hard drive crash. Most of those photos only existed on fototime and are gone forever.Webfoot wrote: ↑April 13th, 2021, 7:41 amThat's terrible news. I presume you still have the photos. I don't see a way to tell which photo was which from the fototime identifiers so I would have to look at each trip report and make a guess as to what photo went where.
I paid to use the site for 18 years and had about 30,000 photos on it. It's a real shock to lose all the work I'd done to label, sort into albums, etc. not to mention all my OH TR's are now without photos. At least I have most of the original pics. Some people, from what I've read online, didn't save the originals and have lost years of irreplaceable photos.
I find it very odd and a bit suspicious, that fototime didn't have a good back-up system. This is all they had to say and this came after a month of silence - and I had to do a bit of research to even find this:
On March 10, due to circumstances beyond our control, FotoTime suffered a catastrophic outage. This outage effected both the infrastructure and data. Regretably, due to this outage, FotoTime has ceased operations.
We would like to thank all of our customers for supporting us all of these years. This difficult decision to cease operations was the only option available to us.

This is the same area that I am curious about. I made this post: ucp.php?i=pm&mode=view&f=0&p=24408
I got a little information and Ed Blodgett looked for a trail from the Bluff Mountain Trail but couldn't find a trail that went down into the Washougal River valley.
Down in the valley near the map posted in this thread, DNR has abandoned a section of road along the Washougal River from Prospector Creek north along the Washougal River to Meander Creek. I couldn't find any trail north of Meander Creek.
