the curiosities of upper Salmon River

Post by Chip Down » September 25th, 2019, 6:00 pm

Generations of development and recreation on Mt Hood have left some strange things. Exhibit A: Salmon River below Timberline Lodge. These are just a few favorites among the detritus of our "advanced civilization":

From a distance I thought this was a utility vault of some sort. Nope, it was a huge block of foam rubber.

Proof that dinosaurs once roamed Mt Hood.

I've never bought a carabiner in my life.

So much for "leave no trace"

Kind of reminds me of: Do as I say, not as I do... When it comes to gov't related "programs"

I could do pages on this topic. :D

You're doing well, then. Between those Spirit lockers up on Munra and this Helium, you'll have a full rack soon so you can set complicated belays for all your.... batmanning?

I hope you rode that kiddie car/wagon thing down the trail!

And then there's this: https://wyeastblog.org/2010/05/25/stop- ... r-glacier/

That post is nine years old now but I would assume nothing has changed.

The Oregonian eventually did weigh in too (https://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/2014 ... _is_b.html), but the practice apparently hasn't stopped. There's a lot to dislike about Timberline - like, the whole fact of its existence as a parasite on public land - but this is near the top for me.

I'm sorry, I'm not a skier - they're salting the Palmer glacier? What does that accomplish? Dumping salt onto terrain that isn't covered in asphalt is just.... ???
