Re: How specifically do you define a pass?

So technically, I totally agree with you but emotionally not so much. “Yay I got to the bottom of a hill!” 😉 Well, I would counter that "specifically [how] you define a pass" is very different from determining whether you "climbed" one. Just like helicoptering onto a mountain peak doesn't change it...

Re: How specifically do you define a pass?

The direction you happen to be moving when you arrive at a pass has no bearing on whether or not it is a pass.

Re: Costco trekking poles

FYI, Amazon has them too, with two choices of material for the grips: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L2HYPNW/ I'd go for the Eva grips if you can. Mine are cork, and they have very hard, sharp contours that dig into fingers. Since you mention strap adjustments, the adjustment on the one pole was loos...

Re: Best trail car/truck

Honestly, I like what I heard about AWD/4WD from a dirt-biking friend: "Only use your AWD to get out of trouble, never into trouble." I just make sure not to get into trouble. That's either sour grapes or paranoia, IMHO. If you're that worried, you should disable one drive wheel on your 2WD vehicle...

Re: Best trail car/truck

I can't think of any trailheads that I want to go to that require 4WD That may depend on when you want to go! The vast majority of times I use 4WD on forest roads is early season when there's lingering snow. Often there are short sections, sometimes just a few yards across, that are trivial with 4W...

My greatest fear is that this unknown critter deposited her eggs in my arm, and her offspring will soon claw their way out when viable.
I don't know what they are, but they don't claw their way out. They always claw their way to your brain.

Welcome, Gargaldl. I'm an east-sider too, in WA, and also a recent retiree. You've got some great stuff down there in eastern OR. I'm always looking forward to my next Wallowas trip.

Re: RIP, my Costco trekking poles

I'm one of the few who don't like those Costco poles. Two things: the hard cork handles have sharp ridges that dig into fingers when the straps are used correctly; and the straps won't hold adjustment, requiring tightening every couple of hours or so. And the looser those straps get, the more irrit...
