Re: Leaders Failing to Prevent/Mitigate Fires
In this recent example, I can see why there's an overwhelming urge to put out all fires. You can't just let fires go because it's natural. You must see the lack of any connection between these two statements, no? The events of the last week+ are decidedly unnatural. People need to understand that w...

Re: Trapper Creek fire
The typical major fire frequency in the west can be up to a thousand years, First I've heard that, Dean. Where might one read more? Makes some intuitive sense, but I do wonder how such a thing might be known. After the Eagle Creek fire, I went to a number of presentations in the local area given by...

Re: Leaders Failing to Prevent/Mitigate Fires
When I'm in wild areas away from trailhead I see very little trash, people are mostly pretty well behaved. Interesting; that hasn't been my experience at all. I find just as much bad behavior in the backcountry as I do along roads, campgrounds, etc. It's just a different kind of bad behavior. (Exce...

Re: Trapper Creek fire
The fire boundary has expanded a bit down from Howe Ridge and it appears that most of the Sunshine Trail and Rim Trail and Shortcut Trail may be in the burn. But I don't really understand how the fire could burn even part way down into the Trapper Creek Canyon but spare Observation Peak and Sister ...

Re: Leaders Failing to Prevent/Mitigate Fires
I was camped on Mt Adams on Labor Day weekend and somebody asked me if there was a campfire ban, because they saw many such fires in the Killen Creek area. I said I didn't know but assumed so. In fact there was not such a ban and since then I did ask a ranger I know by email but did not get a respo...

Re: Leaders Failing to Prevent/Mitigate Fires
I didn't do a good survey, but I saw a lot of "no fires" signs before Labor Day - campgrounds, trailheads. I can't remember any places fires were allowed. Lots of campfires burning, and firewood for sale, across the GPNF over Labor Day weekend. Which is why I sought out whether or not they were cur...

Re: Leaders Failing to Prevent/Mitigate Fires
Not to fan the flames, but simply to help document the full timeline, GPNF didn't have a campfire ban in place until 9/9... https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd801776.pdf I actually wrote to them on 9/7 asking why. They now say Big Hollow started 9/8 from (admittedly) unknown cause(...

Re: Trapper Creek fire
No sarcasm at all. I genuinely don't want to read conspiracy theory posts about a forest service cover up. Hmmm, well, it's not much of a theory, really. And I certainly wasn't suggesting a conspiracy. Incompetence could be another explanation, if not a "cover-up," for the facts I highlighted (in a...

Re: Trapper Creek fire
Sure that's the same fire? The notes say detected this morning. Rewriting history. It'd look bad to institute a campfire ban (9/9!) a full week after the fire started, rather than the next day. As a wise person once said, is this super negative uninformed hyperbolic trolling really necessary? Reall...
