Re: I just won the "forgot something stupid" olympics

My buddy and I go through a verbal checklist when we carpool: "SKISBOOTSPOLES." Etc.

But there's a reason I own two helmet and two goggles, etc.

The worst was going out of town for multi-day ski traverse and forgetting a prescription medication.

Making the most of any season

My hike yesterday https://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=31153 got me thinking about how uncrowded our trails currently are, in spite of the calm, balmy weather and lack of snow on trails. It's a shame that people aren't out hiking as much as they do in the warmer months. There are p...

Hunchback Mountain Trail, Dec 18, 2023

I'm a skier during the winter, and El Nino has been kicking our butts recently. I've managed once half-day each of backcountry Nordic skiing (in the middle of a rare cold snowstorm), alpine touring (on ICE above Timberline Lodge) and at Meadows (soft groomers). Given the limited or dangerously icy c...

Re: Fall explorations in the Gifford, Lost Creek, Dry Creek and unknown bonus

That's so cool! How are you accessing this LiDAR info? I've noticed that, on Cal Topo (which I use constantly), some areas are frustratingly low-resolution. For instance, I hiked up the Bonanza area, I was fascinated by the very high, very steep clearcut along the MHNF boundary: Screen Shot 2023-12-...

Timberline Lodge is easily accessible from PDX via public transit.
Totally! It's a cheap and pretty low-stress way to get up there.

Here's a trip report from 9 (!) years ago. I am getting so old.

Re: Timberline Trail Backpacking Itinerary and Questions

Good plan! Two things to think about: You may not have heard that glacier creek crossings are easier in the morning: the water flows are lower in the morning, before daytime heat really starts melting water. So if there is a crossing that looks particularly deep and fast, it can be helpful to camp o...

My partner brought hers and so she got to be justifiably smug about it all.
