Re: Seaside to Tillamook Head open or closed?
I was there two weeks ago. I didn't note any closures of any kind. It was all dry too which was a first for me.

Re: Table Mountain smoke apocalypse 082023
Is the questionable parking under the power lines now impossible (gated)? Or are the "stay out" signs getting more aggressive? The last time I hiked Table Mtn was a few years ago. It was an autumn weekend. My car was the first of the day under the power lines. When I returned, another car was nearby...

Re: Jefferson Park Fishing?
Jefferson's forgotten trailhead. I bet it's a lot more popular this year! So true. I was there on Aug 17. The road is in great shape (just a little washboardy) with recent gravel. I arrived at 8am and within 15 minutes, three more cars rolled in. I think it's about 5 miles to Jeff Park from the the...

Re: Herman creek caves
The only bears here are black bears, and you are unlikely to ever see one in the Gorge, let alone encounter it up close (and if you do, it will just run away). There are three bear sighting postings at the Herman Ck TH. The official ODFW sign says a bear was seen nearby on 5-28. Two additional pers...

Re: Juniper Ridge to Juniper and Sunrise Peaks
The thing about the name. If it was in regular use by locals or a Native American name, that would be one thing. But if somebody just made it up, then our trip reports are establishing it, and I am not sure I like that. I am considering reverting to calling it a nameless peak - peak 5800+ or whatev...

Re: Juniper Ridge to Juniper and Sunrise Peaks
I also did the first part of the Blue Lake hiker trail (there is a separate ATV trail). The road to that trailhead, 1.5 miles off FR 23, is not for 2WD vehicles I think. My Subaru did fine, but there are few wide places. If somebody was driving the other way, one of them might have to back up a lon...

Re: Juniper Ridge to Juniper and Sunrise Peaks
Nice hike work! I know that route is not easy. How many hikers did you see? How many motorcycles? Trail users: I've hiked this area of the Dark Divide a few times. I've only encountered motorcycles and never any hikers. As you've pointed out, it's the motorcycles that are keeping the trails open. Th...

Bowl and doily spider observed
On July 12, 2023 I observed the interesting bowl and doily spider on the Stahlman Point trail near Detroit. I'm sorry I have no pictures. There are plenty on the web. At a glance, the web looks like a jumble of wet non-moving cobwebs. A closer look reveals a complex intentional construction. Strands...
