Re: Burnt Granite Trailhead has been obliterated

Thanks for the info, Rob! So I take it the FG directions to the "trailhead" are as before, but the walk begins up a revived section of road? Also, can we use your photo in the FG. I'm thinking I'll quote you directly if that's O.K. Yes - you walk up what used to be a vague old road which is now ver...

Re: Fire in Bull Run Watershed

Inciweb page: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident-infor ... creek-fire

It shows updated as of yesterday but still shows 225 acres. The comments yesterday said there would be an overnight IR flight that would give a more accurate size. Probably get updated today sometime.

Re: Burnt Granite Trailhead has been obliterated

FYI (and I posted this on the Facebook posting as well) - it isn't quite as bad as it sounds. I went up there today to check things out. The "existing" trailhead for Burnt Granite was a repurposed old Skid/Spur road. That road has been reopened, but they stopped where the real trail started. You wal...

If you are on windows, Microsoft has a free one:

If that doesn't work, Wikipedia has a lot of options listed:

Re: Elk lake creek from elk lake

I was planning on going to Elk lake creek soon, how bad do you think the trail is from the other end? From the north end? I'm almost positive you would be able to get there now (I doubt there is still snow up there) - the question would be whether or not the last portion of the road is clear to the...

Re: Elk lake creek from elk lake

Ugh that’s a bummer- I was hoping to hike it from north end on down as it sounds amazing. It’s a bummer that it burned in both 2010 And 2021 :( I wish I could get better aerials or ideas of the boundaries of the bull complex fire. As far as getting up there, the last 1/4 mile Was snow so I parked a...

Re: Elk lake creek from elk lake

Did you take the infamous Road 4697 up to Elk Lake? Just curious, that is the worst road I have ever been on in my life :-) How I made it up there without a flat I will never know. Have you ever driven the road to Frazier turnaround? I've driven both and to me, Frazier turnaround is the worst. Both...

Re: Elk lake creek from elk lake

From elk lake you have about two miles of brushy trail in beautiful old growth. Some snow still on the trail in small patches. Then after that it’s about a mile of burned understory with blowdowns on trail but some living trees. After that it’s scorched earth - nothing alive for over a mile and the...

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels

I reached the Plaza trail by going offtrail up to Salmon Mtn from the Salmon Butte TH. 4610 did have some snow near the Plaza Lake area, but, it was melted out further along my route to Salmon Butte. Apparently, they did some cutting to widen that road as a firebreak during 2020, which was new to m...
