Re: Cache Meadow (mosquitoes! shark!)

So you rode west on 4635 past Lower and Upper Mitchell Quarries and presumably all the way up to 140, where you turned east to get to Cripple Creek Quarry? I don't think I realized there actually was a 2nd more southerly trail from Cache Meadows - I came down the normal 702 trail once on a long loop...

Re: PSA: Sunrise Peak Trailhead inaccessible

That is a long drive to do for naught. :( Are they still doing construction on the road up to Tongue and Juniper? That would another option where you can drive close to the top, since the parking is in the saddle between them, up the side road. But it's at least still a pretty drive out into the Cow...

Re: Standley Cabin/Bear Creek Guard Station (Wallowas) 9-19/20-23

Another good trip, John. I've camped at Boundary camp a number of times (back when it was free!! It was an unsung secret of the western Wallowas, but they added a campsite fee a couple years ago) and have been to the guard station, but never did the drive up to Bear Wallow. On the Bear Creek...

Re: Ridge above Multnomah Falls?

I've been on that ridge a couple of times - always went up via the Elevator Shaft. Ditto. It's the exposed ridge at the top of the talus section of the Elevator Shaft and you can walk out on it to the west until it cliffs out (I think you can see the cliff from the top of the paved switchbacks to t...

Re: Catherine Creek Meadows/China Cap 9-17/18-23

Hey John, glad you got out there. When I went to the Catherine Creek Cabin in 2019 , it looked like some people were staying in it as an alternative to camping. I don't think I mentioned this in my report back then, so here's a couple pics. Interesting to see the lushness of Catherine Creek Meadow i...

Re: Many new fires in Gifford Pinchot

The focus now is on the Snagtooth Mountain Fire. Five fire starts in the Snagtooth Mountain area have merged into one fire. The Snagtooth Mountain Fire is now estimated to be over 200 acres in size. There is also another smaller one in the Dark Divide on the ridge between Holdaway Butte and McCoy P...

Re: Aldrich Butte/Table Mountain access update?

Hikers are now locked out of both the old popular TH's. I checked yesterday (082423) and a new gate has been installed a few hundred feet west of the entrance to the former Bonneville resort. This location is well short of where Mr. Cam's property line is so it may be an illegal placement. However,...

Re: Table Mountain smoke apocalypse 082023

With regards to the Gorge: 1. During the decade we lost access to the convenient Table Mountain trails, we also lost access to many miles of trails on the Oregon side (thanks to the Eagle Creek Fire). I am otherwise in agreement with you - the FS abandons, closes, or otherwise neglects trails and t...

Re: Table Mountain smoke apocalypse 082023

I hiked over to the cliffs, enjoyed what I could of the view and headed down the Westway Trail. Wow! I knew this was a rough, rocky steep mess but in the years since I’d hiked it I’d forgotten just how awful it was! I managed to get it done without hurting myself except for one minor butt plant whe...
