Loowit clockwise from Ape is one of the most reliable places to see goats, and they often wander towards Abraham.
One of the many fun things about that hike.

Re: Mt Adams: Avalanche Valley
Nice report on a great route.
Off-topic question: you observed Goat Rocks melted out. I remember a section of PCT through GR that was always under snow, never melted completely. Are those days gone?

Re: Aldrich Butte/Table Mountain access update?
I keep thinking that, but wondered if it was a secret we're not supposed to discuss.dmthomas49 wrote: ↑August 25th, 2023, 1:03 pmThanks for the update. We could always use the old route, drive up to the back of ridge and walk the short distance to the top.
I'm mostly kidding; it's right there in the open.
Horrible drive though.

Re: Table Mountain smoke apocalypse 082023
I never hiked Aldrich Butte, and with the access problems I figured I never would, but this appears to be a viable distance for me. Do you know if the trail to the top of the butte is passable without too much effort? I remember (I think) when a bold traveler could drive up there. I wonder if that'...

What fun!
I did that once (once was enough), must have been late fall, snow up high, worried about following PCT back down.
I'd forgotten about some sections, but your pics and narrative brought memories back.

Re: Grassy Knoll - the long way. Kelly's TR
The drive went well until we reached Triangle Pass. But then and there, a large log had fallen across the road. It was ‘game over’ as far as driving to the Grassy Knoll TH. I read that, and thought "but Kelly, all you had to do was..." But then I thought "patience, Chip, she knows, she knows". And ...

I've wondered if Hamilton Creek ever gets easy to cross in the summer. Never would have guessed it got that easy!
Westway trail has never bothered me. I'm plenty timid in some places, but not there.

Re: I'm so tired of boot manufacturers lying to us.
Maybe it's time to stop shopping for boots at Big 5? I recently bought a pair of shoes at B5. They were $19. And I love them! Nevados Cayenne. Simple construction, no bells/whistles. Almost entirely knit mesh, very breathable. Outsole is actually a different material than midsole, not just colored ...

it appears I still park like a dick, in spite of previous counselling
Once again, a note on my windshield informed me I'm a dick. First to arrive, I started at one end, not in the middle. As close to the edge as I could, but got out and checked, a bit too close to trail, especially considering I don't want drunks walking past my car with their folding chairs and whatn...
